What is the Old Market?
Most hotels in Sharm El Sheikh sit along the coast, from Naama Bay up to Sharks Bay and Nabq. The Old Market is different: it is in Sharm El Maya, the older part of town near the port, where you find small family shops rather than hotel malls.
It is a place to wander rather than a single sight. Spice sellers pile up colourful mounds of cumin, paprika and dried hibiscus flowers, perfume shops mix oils in glass bottles, and lamp shops glow in the evening. You'll also find T-shirts, papyrus, cotton scarves and the usual souvenirs.
Al Sahaba Mosque
Al Sahaba Mosque stands beside the Old Market and is one of the landmarks of Sharm El Sheikh. It is a large, modern mosque built in a traditional Islamic style, with domes, tall minarets and fine carved details. In the evening it is lit up, which makes it a favourite photo stop.
Everyone can admire it from the square outside. Whether visitors can go inside depends on prayer times and the rules on the day, so your guide or driver will tell you when you're there. If you go in, cover your shoulders and knees; women usually also cover their hair.
The Heavenly Cathedral
The Heavenly Cathedral is a Coptic Orthodox church in the Hay El Nour district of Sharm El Sheikh. Inside, the walls and ceiling are covered with painted scenes from the Bible in bright colours, and many visitors find it one of the most surprising sights in town.
It is a working church, so dress modestly, keep your voice down and ask before taking photos during a service.
How a visit can look
This is only an example. Tell us what you'd like to see and how long you want to stay, and we'll suggest a plan with the price and pickup time.
- Pickup from your hotel in the afternoon or evening.
- A stop at the Heavenly Cathedral, if you'd like to see it.
- Al Sahaba Mosque and the square around it.
- Free time to walk the lanes of the Old Market, shop and have a drink in a café.
- If you like, a walk along the Naama Bay promenade on the way back.
- Transfer back to your hotel.
Shopping and bargaining tips
- Prices are rarely fixed, so friendly bargaining is normal. Decide what something is worth to you before you ask.
- Carry small notes in Egyptian pounds; it makes paying easier. Our money guide explains the rest.
- Spices and perfume oils are popular gifts. Ask to smell or taste before you buy.
- If you don't want to buy, a polite "no, thank you" and a smile is enough.
More to do in the evening
Many guests combine the Old Market with dinner in town or an evening at Soho Square. If you'd rather spend the evening in the desert, the Super Safari includes a camel ride at sunset, a Bedouin dinner and a show. Our guide to money and tipping helps with shopping, and things to do in Sharm El Sheikh has more ideas.
