Snorkeling over coral reefs at Tiran Island near Sharm El Sheikh

Snorkeling in Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm El Sheikh sits beside some of the best snorkeling in the Red Sea. The two classic trips are Ras Mohammed National Park, where the Gulf of Suez meets the Gulf of Aqaba, and the reefs around Tiran Island in the Strait of Tiran.

Both are full-day boat trips with lunch on board, a snorkeling guide and the option of an introductory dive — no certificate needed.

Ras Mohammed or Tiran Island?

  • Ras Mohammed and White Island (about 8 hours): two snorkeling stops in the national park plus White Island, a sandbank in the open sea. Park entrance included.
  • Tiran Island (about 8 hours): a two-hour sail up the Gulf of Aqaba to the reefs of the Strait of Tiran, with a stop at the shallow Blue Lagoon and three snorkeling stops in all.
  • Ras Mohammed by bus (5 hours): a land tour of the park with snorkeling from the beach — the shortest and cheapest option.

Tips for a good day

  • Use reef-safe sun cream and a T-shirt or rash vest — the sun on the water is strong
  • Never stand on or touch the coral
  • Bring a towel, water and a waterproof bag for your phone
  • If you are not a confident swimmer, wear a life jacket; in Ras Mohammed it is required
