What to Pack for Sharm El Sheikh: The Practical Checklist

Packing for Sharm El Sheikh is mostly swimwear and sunscreen, but a desert safari and a day at sea each need a few extras. Here is our checklist, from the people who run the trips.

Sharm El Sheikh is sunny all year, so the basics are easy: light clothes, swimwear and serious sun protection. But a desert safari and a boat day each call for a few things most people forget. This checklist is based on what we ask guests to bring on our tours.

Clothes for every season

  • Summer (June to September): loose, light clothing in breathable fabrics; it is very hot in the middle of the day.
  • Spring and autumn: the same, plus a light layer for evenings.
  • Winter (December to February): days are warm, but evenings are cool and the desert can be cold after sunset. Bring a fleece or light jacket, especially for evening safaris.
  • Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) for visiting mosques or the Old Market.

Our climate guide has month-by-month temperatures.

For a desert safari

On our quad and buggy safaris we ask guests to bring:

  • A scarf or buff to cover your face from dust. Your guide can show you how to tie it Bedouin-style.
  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from sand.
  • Closed, comfortable shoes, not flip-flops.
  • Sun cream for face, neck and arms.
  • A warm layer in winter for the ride back and evenings at the camp.
  • A camera or phone with a strap or a zip pocket.

Scarves and safety glasses are not included on the safaris, so pack your own. Find out more in our desert safari guide.

For a boat or snorkeling trip

  • A copy of your passport. It is required for boat trips to Ras Mohammed and Tiran Island.
  • Swimwear and a towel. Towels are not provided on the boat trips.
  • Your own mask and snorkel if you have them. Snorkeling equipment is not included on the Ras Mohammed trips, and a mask that fits makes all the difference.
  • A rash vest or T-shirt for swimming; it protects from sunburn better than sunscreen.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen.
  • A sun hat for the deck.
  • Seasickness tablets if you are prone to it.
  • A dry bag or waterproof phone pouch.
  • Reef shoes for entering the sea from the shore.

Health and documents

  • Passport, valid for at least six months; see our visa guide.
  • Travel insurance details.
  • Any regular medication, plus rehydration sachets and something for upset stomachs.
  • Insect repellent for evenings.
  • A refillable water bottle; drink bottled or filtered water.

Money and electronics

  • Cash in small notes for tips, drinks and extras. Read our money and tipping guide.
  • A bank card for ATMs and hotels.
  • Plug adapter: Egypt uses the European two-pin plugs (types C and F) at 220 V.
  • Power bank for long excursion days.

What you don't need to pack

  • Snorkel fins and life jackets can be rented locally.
  • Heavy hiking boots: trainers are fine for the Colored Canyon.
  • Lots of formal wear: most restaurants are relaxed.
